Kanchipuram has 108 Shaiva and 18 Vaishnava temples. The Hindu philosopher Ramanujacharya who is enshrined in Sriperumbudur, propagated the Vishishtadvaita philosophy studied here.
Kanchipuram Kamakshi Amman
Kamakshi Amman temple is an ancient temple here and the most famous of all the temples in the city. It is associated with Adi Shankara. Legend has it that Kamakshi offered worship to a Shivalingam made out of sand and gained Shiva’s hand in marriage. The temple covers an area of about 5 acres and the sanctum is covered with gold plated Vimanam. Kamakshi is enshrined in the temple in a sitting posture called the Parabramha Swaroopini, seated with the trinity of Bramha, Vishnu and Shiva.
The God Kamakshi prevails in Shakti form in here. There are fifty one Shakti Peetas across the country. Kamakshi Amman Koil, Kanchipuram is named as “Nabisthana Ottiyana Peetam”. The goddess is “Sri Kamakshi”. The meaning of name “Kamakshi” is that the Goddess is having Saraswaty Devi in one eye and Lakshmi Devi in another eye. Lilitha Sahasranamam portrays the power of the goddess.
Kanchipuram is well known for its Silk Sarees also.
